The Crisis Center was started in 1970 by a dedicated group of community leaders who saw a need to address the community's wellbeing. The organization was initially housed in the basement of Birmingham’s City Hall, staffed by volunteers, and depended solely on private donations. In 1973, the Crisis Center was accepted as a Community Chest United Way Agency. Today, the Crisis Center offers programs that include Crisis Intervention and Prevention Services, Sexual Assault Support Services, Mental Health Services, and Recovery Support Services.
